DR. ELIZABETH A. COWLES
upon being awarded
THE CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
2007 UNIVERSITY LEVEL TRUSTEES TEACHING AWARD
May 10, 2007
WHEREAS, Through BR#07-09, the Board of Trustees of the Connecticut State University System reaffirmed its commitment to promote an environment that supports and recognizes exemplary faculty teaching as an essential part of fulfilling the universities’ missions, and
WHEREAS, The Trustees of the Connecticut State University System established five teaching awards annually: one university award to a faculty member from each of the CSUS universities and a single system award, chosen among the four university awards, to the faculty member whose work best exemplifies the values, standards of excellence and consistent quality of teaching practice that are worthy of attention by the CSUS community and beyond, and
WHEREAS, The awards are designated for assistant or associate professors in good standing with the university who hold tenure-track or tenure positions upon nomination by colleagues, departments, schools, and/or self nominations and who have at least five years of demonstrated excellence in teaching practice and two years of collegial interactions resulting in the improvement of student learning in university programs (including the use of assessment of learning outcomes to improve instruction), and
WHEREAS, Dr. Cowles, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Eastern Connecticut State University, is recognized by the university community and beyond as a model teacher drawing on her impressive research credentials, an educator able to integrate biology with her knowledge of physical sciences and society to engage and motivate students, a thoughtful implementor of technologies in teaching and learning, an inspiring force for students to engage in independent research, a key participant in major curricular undertakings emphasizing the liberal arts mission of the University and a leader in large scale educational initiatives (exemplified by her role in the Advanced Placement program at the state and national levels), and
WHEREAS, Dr. Cowles has been selected by an appropriate peer-review process at ECSU and recommended to the System Review Committee of CSU University Professors therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Board of Trustees for the Connecticut State University System commends Dr. Cowles for her excellence in teaching and effectiveness in collegial interactions resulting in the improvement of student learning, congratulates her on receipt of the University Level Trustees Teaching Award and extends its best wishes for continued success in these critical endeavors for the University, and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Chancellor of the Connecticut State University System will work with the university Presidents to ensure maximum visibility to this award through local and statewide print and electronic media.
