Eastern to Present Renewable Energy Curriculum Workshop
WILLIMANTIC, CONN., July 10, 2007 — Eastern Connecticut State University will present a Renewable Energy Curriculum Workshop for Teachers on July 23 and July 24.
The workshop, which also is open to Eastern faculty and staff, is aimed toward community college teachers and administrators, and will have about 25 educators from across the state in attendance. The workshop will held prepare these educators to offer introductory college-level classes in sustainable energy studies, similar to those offered at Eastern. Fred Loxsom, chair of Eastern’s Center for Sustainable Energy Studies, and Norma Vivar-Orum, a recent Eastern graduate who serves as the sustainable energy studies technical assistant, will instruct the workshop.
Issues that will be discussed include electric power, electricity generation and distribution, wind energy, solar energy, hydroelectricity and biomass, fuel cells, transportation issues, gasoline and oil, hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles, biofuels, fuel cell vehicles, and a tutorial on online information resources.
Over the past few years, Eastern installed the state’s largest geothermal heating and cooling system, installed photovoltaic electric panels on bus stops and recycling centers, and was the first institution to use B20 bio-fuel to heat one of its facilities.
