FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement by Chancellor David G. Carter

Connecticut State University System

“Our hearts go out to the students, faculty, families and friends of the Virginia Tech community as they struggle with inconceivable grief and anguish.  As an expression of respect and remembrance, the Connecticut State University System -- Central, Eastern, Southern and Western Connecticut state universities – paused in our daily activities to observe a moment of silent reflection at 2:00 PM today, to honor the memory of those tragically killed yesterday.

Although we are miles away in Connecticut, distance does not diminish the depth of our heartfelt sorrow for the people of Virginia Tech. We hope that our positive thoughts and, for those who choose, prayers, will serve to comfort each and every individual not only on this day, but through the difficult days ahead.

Understandably, the people of Connecticut are also interested in the precautionary measures taken at the universities of the Connecticut State University System.

Each of the universities has in place a critical incident or emergency management plan that specifically outlines steps to be taken in the event of any emergency, to do everything humanly possible to protect the safety of the campus community.

In a number of instances, portions of those plans have been utilized in the past in response to limited incidents on campus, and have functioned effectively.  The plans

and procedures are routinely reviewed, upgraded and revised, consistent with recommendations from law enforcement and crisis management officials.

Those plans are now undergoing additional scrutiny, and collaborative discussions have already begun, involving police officials and the leadership at Central, Eastern, Southern and Western, to review existing procedures in light of the tragic events at Virginia Tech.

Through the leadership of the Board of Trustees and the University Presidents, that comprehensive review will proceed expeditiously, with the well-being of the students, faculty and staff being our paramount concern.”
